Interview with Quynh Nhu, Coco, Do Quyen

The Le Van Khoa Performance on Saturday, October  11, 2008 ended around 11:30 pm. Wanting to stay in each other’s company, some of us decided to go get a bite to eat. The only restaurant that seemed to be open that hour was Thanh My. On our way in we saw … LE VAN KHOA!! He was getting a late night snack with Kateryna Myronjuk and Irina Starodub, two of the non-Vietnamese performers. Inside, we also said hello to Ngoc Ha.

The wait was quite lengthy and with the group of 6, it was hard to seat us quicky. So to keep us entertained, we interviewed Quynh Nhu, Coco, and Do Quyen about their singing adventures the night before.

Lunch with Pham Ha

... Hey! Let's go to Quan Hy!

... Hey! Let's go to Quan Hy!

After our last rehearsal before the performance, Song Xanh was hungry and ready to eat! We asked singer Pham Ha to join us and to our surprise he agreed … but he would only take a beverage – he does not eat before a performance. After many minutes of suggestions and options, we decide to go from the Carpenter Center in Long Beach back to Santa Ana to get some real Vietnamese food at Quan Hy. As we try to improve ourselves musically, our lunch with Pham Ha was a nice opportunity to talk to a soloist about tips and techniques that he uses.

Pre-Le Van Khoa Performance

Our last rehearsal before the Le Van Khoa Performance

Our last rehearsal before the Le Van Khoa Performance

Although the performance did not begin until 7:30 pm, the dedicated members of Ngan Khoi (which includes all the members of Song Xanh) had to be there at 1:00 pm for a sound check. We stood backstage in between the Green Room and the door labeled “QUIET AREA” which led to the stage. Thay Binh would not be conducting us for 3 of our 4 songs so we needed to be able to follow the subtle signs and body language cues of two other conductors: Nguyen Khanh Hong and Le Van Khoa.
