How You Started Singing (in General): I sang in my high school choir and did a little bit of musical theatre in undergrad. And I sing a lot in the car.
How You Found / Started Singing in Ngàn Khơi / Sóng Xanh: My mother suggested I join Ngàn Khơi so that I could use music and singing to improve my Vietnamese language skills. When I first started, I was embarrassed and didn’t talk with anyone … but soon I realized that the other young adults in Ngàn Khơi were in a similar situation, trying to explore and understand our Vietnamese roots in an English-speaking world. Song Xanh is a safe haven for me to practice my Vietnamese – they understand me when I switch back and forth between languages and help me along when I don’t quite get the lyrics of our songs.
Musical Influences: songs with meaningful lyrics, strong harmonies, a good beat, or that are fun to sing really loud in the car
Hobbies: amateur photography, eating vegan food, giving bear hugs
